Farm Security Administration Photographs...

There's a fantastic, groundbreaking photographic/social history resource at http://photogrammar.yale.edu/ that contains 170,000 photographs from 1935 to 1945 created by the United States Farm Security Administration and Office of War Information (FSA-OWI). As an appetiser, here are some examples:

Arthur Rothstein - Herding Sheep, Natrona County, Wyoming (1936)

Marion Post Walcott - Mountain woman carrying home groceries from the store. Near Hyden, Kentucky (1940)

John Vachon - Church at Wounded Knee, South Dakota (1940)

Arthur Rothstein - Children of submarginal farmer. Pennington County, South Dakota (1936)

Arthur Rothstein - Wife and child of submarginal farmer. Oswego County, New York (1937)

Walker Evans - Carpenter, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania (1935)

Dorothea Lange - Friends basement church built May, 1939. Dead Ox Flat, Malheur County, Oregon (1939)

John Vachon - Miners playing cards during May 1939 coal strike. Kempton, West Virginia (1939)

Marion Post Wolcott - "Negro" day laborer moving from one man's farm to another to get work. He wasn't needed any more by former "employer." The son of his new employer said his father used to have tenants but that they "skinned" him too often by moving out on him all the time. So he just hires by the day now. Near Madison, Georgia (1939)

Jack Delano - Workers outside a store on the main street of Childersburg, Alabama (1941)

Russell Lee - Abandoned house at the abandoned town of Cambria, Wyoming (1937)

Ben Shahn - Miner's son, Pleasant Unity, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania (1935)
